Our center, with the support of its administration and as part of its ongoing scientific activities, held a workshop on “The International Standard for Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015)” on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Organized by the workshops and seminars committee, the session was moderated by Assistant Professor Ali Kamel Wanas and presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar and Dr. Hind Diaa Hadi, Head of the Fish Department. The workshop detailed the key specifications of global environmental systems and the benefits of adhering to internationally recognized standards for preserving critical environmental components like air, water, and soil. The 2015 update to ISO 14001, the world’s most widely adopted environmental management system standard, was a central focus. The presenters explained how this standard provides a framework for establishing effective environmental management systems, enabling organizations to achieve commercial success while prioritizing environmental conservation. The lecture aimed to familiarize attendees with this international standard and its application in protecting the Iraqi environment from the increasingly critical problem of pollution, which carries significant negative economic and social consequences. ISO 14001 is part of a broader series designed to assist organizations in improving their environmental performance through effective environmental management. The standard promotes enhanced environmental efficiency and reduced negative environmental impact by emphasizing compliance with legal requirements and environmental regulations. The workshop’s key recommendation was to leverage the advantages of ISO 14001 by implementing a cycle of environmental management improvement encompassing planning, implementation, evaluation, review, and continuous improvement. We wish our center’s teachers continued success in serving the community, science, and knowledge.
