The Natural History Research Center and Museum / University of Baghdad hosted a meeting of the Animal Genetic Resources Committee on Thursday, July 16, 2026, with the membership of Prof. Dr. Hana Hani Abdel Hussein, Director of the Center, and Prof. Dr. Zainab Alwan Makkawi, teaching assistant in the Department of Vertebrates, representing the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the committee. The Iraqi animal genetic resources system was discussed at the meeting. The session was chaired by Dr. Abdul Amir Abdullah Issa/Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Livestock, and Mr. Amr Alaa El-Din/Ministry of Environment, with the rest of the members, representatives of several relevant ministries.
The justifications for preparing a national system concerned with regulating access to national genetic resources and sharing their benefits were also discussed.
The draft system was also discussed through definitions, concepts, goals, application, relationship with applicable legislation, and coordination with ministries.
The committee recommends conducting scientific research to preserve authentic Iraqi genetic resources, whether animal, plant, or microbial.
This activity achieves the fourth goal of quality education and the seventeenth goal: partnerships to achieve the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals.
