A recent workshop at our center addressed the critical issue of drug addiction in Iraq. The session, titled “Drugs in Iraq: A Dangerous Threat to Society,” was led by Dr. Zainab Alwan Makkawi and assit.lecturer Khalida Ibrahim Hassoun.
The workshop highlighted the dangers of illegal drugs, including their negative health impacts, particularly on young people. It also explored the devastating social consequences of addiction, such as financial strain, family problems, and increased violence.
The discussion emphasized the importance of prevention strategies. These include:
Social, family, and school awareness programs: Educating communities about the dangers of drugs is crucial in reducing addiction rates.
Following doctor’s prescriptions: Proper medication use ensures safety and reduces the risk of dependence.
Building positive support systems: Surrounding oneself with positive influences and seeking professional help when needed are essential for overcoming addiction.
Avoiding early exposure: Abstaining from alcohol and drugs during adolescence minimizes the risk of future addiction.
Promoting healthy lifestyles: Participating in anti-drug campaigns and engaging in social activities can contribute to a healthy life.
By promoting these strategies and fostering collaboration with organizations like schools and religious communities, we can work towards a future free from the destructive effects of drug addiction.
