A recent workshop at our center, “Snails: A Blessing or a Bane for Your Aquarium,” addressed the interesting topic of snails in aquariums. The session, moderated by assistant lecturer Hiba Mohamed Jihad, aimed to raise awareness among aquarium lovers about the dual nature of these creatures.
While snails may add aesthetic appeal to an aquarium, their true value lies in their ecological role. They serve as beneficial scavengers, consuming algae, detritus (decomposing organic matter) and fish food scraps. This helps maintain clean water and a healthy ecosystem for your fish.
However, not all snails are created equal. Some species reproduce quickly and can overrun a tank if left unchecked. The workshop stressed the importance of choosing the right type of snail to meet the specific needs of your aquarium.
Here are some basic tips for keeping your ampoule snail happy and thriving:
Providing appropriate living conditions: Maintain a clean and healthy aquarium environment for optimal snail health.
Avoid overcrowding: Make sure you have enough space and resources for your chosen snail collection.
Maintain oxygen levels: Provide surface area for snails to access atmospheric oxygen.
By understanding the role of snails and making informed choices, aquarium hobbyists can create a balanced and thriving underwater world.
