As part of its ongoing scientific initiatives, the Natural History Research and Museum Center at the University of Baghdad, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar, organized a field trip on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
The expedition’s first stop was Lake Razzaza, a significant wetland situated between Karbala and Anbar Governorates. The team then ventured to the Al-Tar Caves, a remarkable geological formation located southwest of Karbala.
Led by Professor Dr. Afkar Muslim Hadi, the group, which included several lecturers, was joined by renowned geologist Professor Dr. Aqil Abbas Al-Zubaidi. Dr. Al-Zubaidi provided valuable insights into the Al-Tar Caves, their historical and cultural significance, and their recent recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The primary objectives of the field trip were to explore both regions, collect biological specimens for further research, and foster knowledge exchange among the participating faculty members. The collected samples will contribute to the center’s 2024 research plan.
