A scientific team from the Research Center and Museum of Natural History at the University of Baghdad recently took part in a critical national workshop to update Iraq’s National Strategy and Action Plan for Biological Diversity (NBSSP 7)and prepare the country’s Seventh National Report for the Convention on Biological Diversity.<\/p>\n
The team, representing the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on the National Strategy Committee, included the center’s director, Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar, and Professor Dr. Razzaq Shaalan Augul.<\/p>\n
Workshop Focus and Outcomes<\/p>\n
The workshop, held by the Ministry of Environment in Erbil, Kurdistan, from October 3rd to 6th, 2025, convened technical agents, directors, and representatives from relevant ministries, governmental bodies, and the Kurdistan Regional Government, alongside environment and biodiversity specialists.<\/p>\n
Key discussions revolved around:<\/p>\n
* Assessing the implementation of current national goals.<\/p>\n
*Developing executive programs for the updated national strategy.<\/p>\n
* Methodology for drafting the seventh national report.<\/p>\n
* Updating data from ministries and sectoral bodies.<\/p>\n
*Addressing gaps and challenges hindering strategy implementation.<\/p>\n
*Aligning national goals with new global biodiversity targets.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Major Recommendation and Contribution to SDGs<\/p>\n A significant outcome of the workshop was the emphasis on the urgent necessity of establishing natural reserves in Iraq’s northern region.
