The Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad held an event today, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to celebrate International Day for Biodiversity under the theme “One Earth, Many Stories.” This event was organized with the support and guidance of the center’s director, Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar.

\nThe celebration featured a lecture by Professor Dr. Aqeel Abbas Al-Zubaidi from Al-Karkh University of Science, which was attended by faculty and staff from the center. The event also included awareness posters highlighting the global and Iraqi efforts to protect nature and the environment.
\nThe lecture stressed the significance of this international day and the critical need to sustain work in fields that advance sustainable development and protect biological and geological diversity.
\nIntegrating Diversity with Human Needs
\nA key focus of the event was illustrating how geological diversity is essential for providing daily human needs. This includes:
\nResources: Water, transportation fuel, and minerals.
\nTechnology: Rare metals, plastics, and glass are used to manufacture devices like smartphones.
\nRenewable Energy: Materials such as steel for wind turbines and silicon for solar panels.
\nRecommendations for Future Events
\nThe researchers made recommendations for impactful future activities in this field, suggesting events that align with UNESCO.
\nrequirements. These activities could include:
\nOrganizing field trips to geological or archaeological sites.
\nConducting volunteer work to clean up local geological sites.
\nHosting conferences, seminars, and workshops at universities.
\nGiving lectures at schools.
\nHolding public discussions and dialogues.
