On July 24, 2024, our center hosted a workshop titled “Human Rights Law on the Protection of Women.” Led by Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar and organized by the workshop committee headed by lecturer Muhammad Enad Ghazaun, in collaboration with our center’s women’s affairs officer and Assistant lecturer Ali Kamel Wanas, the event aimed to shed light on women’s rights from historical to contemporary legal frameworks.<\/p>\n

Assistant lecturer Fatima Hussein and Agricultural Inspector Alia Ismail delved into legal texts dating back to Hammurabi’s code and tracing their evolution to the 21st century. The workshop emphasized the importance of women’s rights as a cornerstone of social justice, aligning with the United Nations Charter’s principles of equality and non-discrimination.<\/p>\n

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent international conventions underscore the equal rights of men and women. Despite these advancements, the workshop highlighted the persistence of discriminatory laws against women in Iraq, such as those related to “honor killings” (Article 409) and marital abuse (Article 41).<\/p>\n

The workshop concluded with recommendations urging the Iraqi government and society to prioritize women’s privacy and safety, to implement laws that uphold gender equality, and to eliminate harmful practices. Recognizing women as essential societal pillars, we strive for a future where justice and equal rights prevail.<\/p>\n
