Under the patronage of the President of the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul-Hassan Atiya Al-Zughaibi, and the direct supervision of the Assistant President for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Suhail Najm Abdullah, the Department of Scientific Affairs organized a workshop titled “Plan to Improve Scientific Research Indicators and Policies at the University of Baghdad.” This event took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Mahdi Hantoush Hall in the College of Engineering.

The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Hanaa Hani Al-Saffar, Director of the Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zainab Alwan Makkawi, the Center’s Scientific Affairs Officer.

The workshop aimed to enhance the scientific research plan by shifting the focus from “high quantitative output” to “deep qualitative and applied impact.” Key objectives included developing the university’s journals and qualifying its prestigious journals for full inclusion in Scopus databases. The workshop also encouraged a transition towards sustainability and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, while directing research efforts toward addressing Iraq’s critical challenges, such as water issues, climate change, renewable energy, desertification, digital transformation, and cybersecurity.

Furthermore, the workshop aimed to elevate the global rankings of the University of Baghdad, with goals to place it among the top 500-600 universities in the QS World University Rankings and the top 600-800 in the Times rankings by 2031.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
