With the support of Assistant Professor Dr. Hana Hani Al-Saffar, Head of the iraqi Natural History Research Center and Museum, University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Afkar Muslim Hadi, Head of the Vertebrates Department at the Natural History Research Center and Museum, University of Baghdad, participated as a member of the project to restore natural ecosystems in selected urban areas within threatened environments. The project, under the supervision of the Department of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Central Region, Ministry of Environment, was a workshop for this program held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The workshop was attended by the Director General of the Department of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Central Region, Dr. Eng. Sinan Jaafar, and the general directors of the ministries, along with representatives from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the technical team supervising the project, and a number of supporting entities.
The aim of the workshop was to support national efforts aimed at consolidating the principles of sustainable management of environmental resources and the conservation of biodiversity in urban areas. It also aimed to establish solid foundations for improving the environmental situation within cities by enhancing the resilience of local ecosystems, improving the quality of urban life, and enabling cities to meet increasing climate challenges. One of the workshop’s most important recommendations was that this project represents an advanced step in implementing environmental solutions based on scientific and practical foundations. It reflects the Central Region Environment Department’s commitment to preserving green spaces within the capital, as a fundamental pillar in building more resilient and sustainable cities.
