As part of the scientific activities undertaken by our center, and with the support and guidance of the Director of the Natural History Research Center and Museum/University of Baghdad, Assistant Professor Dr. Hanaa Hani Al-Saffar, a research team from the Natural History Research Center and Museum/University of Baghdad conducted a scientific field trip to the Yusufiyah area on Thursday, April 30, 2026, to fulfill the requirements of scientific research. The research team consisted of: Professor Dr. Afkar Muslim Hadi, Assistant Professor Dr. Khansaa Rashid, Lecturer Dr. Zainab Alwan Makawi, Assistant Lecturer Lubna Majeed, Assistant Lecturer Sarah Jamal, Assistant Lecturer Yasmin Sarmad Hassan, and Geological Assistant Fatima Abdul Wadood. Professor Dr. Aqeel Abbas Al-Zubaidi from Al-Karkh University of Science also accompanied the team.

The field trip aimed to conduct field surveys on biodiversity and study various plant, fungal, insect, and vertebrate species, including birds. It also involved collecting insect, fungal, and plant specimens for study and classification to meet the research requirements of the 2026 research plan.

The researchers’ most important recommendation during the field survey was the need to continue organizing scientific field trips, given their importance in developing research skills and strengthening cooperation between academic institutions and the agricultural sector to benefit from shared expertise. They also recommended providing the necessary equipment for sample collection and field and laboratory testing, documenting the plant and animal species recorded in the region within scientific databases, focusing on biological control and reducing the use of harmful chemical pesticides, encouraging students and researchers to conduct specialized studies on biodiversity in the region, and finally, protecting the agricultural environment in Al-Yousifiya from pollution and environmental degradation.

This activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). We wish everyone success and good fortune in serving the community, science, and knowledge.
