The Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific field trip to the holy city of Karbala on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The team consisted of Assistant Professor Dr. Hanaa Abdul Hussein and Dr. Suhad Yassin Jassim, accompanied by Dr. Haider Naeem Al-Ashbal from the University of Karbala.
Biological samples were collected from various areas of the city, including the Abu Zar’a area, particularly alfalfa farms, due to their rich biodiversity (insects and invertebrates). Samples were also collected from the Al-Salamiyah area in the Al-Husayniyah district. The team observed biodiversity and plant infestations and will conduct further surveys in the area at different times to monitor changes in biodiversity. The most important recommendation made by the researchers during the field survey was the need to continue organizing scientific field trips, given their importance for developing research skills and strengthening cooperation between academic institutions and the agricultural sector to benefit from shared expertise. This includes providing the necessary supplies for sample collection and equipment for field and laboratory testing, documenting the plant and animal species recorded in the region within scientific databases, and focusing on biological control and reducing the use of harmful chemical pesticides. The research team also recommended encouraging students and researchers to conduct specialized studies on biodiversity and its protection from pollution and environmental degradation.
This activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 15 (Life on Land), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
We wish everyone success in serving the community, science, and knowledge.
