Under the guidance of its director, Prof. Dr. Harith Saeed Al-Ward, the Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad launched an awareness campaign on Monday, October 26, 2026, by distributing posters titled “Conservation and Sustainability of Water and Energy.” This initiative is part of the broader strategy for implementing sustainable development and was carried out in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Division at the University of Baghdad. Participants included Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Alwan Makawi, Assistant Lecturer Khalida Ibrahim Hassoun, and Assistant Lecturer Sarah Jamal Jalil.
The activity aims to promote environmental awareness regarding the importance of conserving water and energy, and to foster a culture of sustainability. It encourages the adoption of modern irrigation techniques—specifically drip irrigation—to reduce water waste, promotes a shift toward renewable energy sources such as solar power, and advocates for the use of energy-efficient appliances. These efforts contribute to the preservation of natural resources, the mitigation of negative environmental impacts, and the realization of sustainable development. The key recommendations highlighted by this activity include raising environmental awareness regarding the importance of conserving water and energy. This can be achieved through seminars, educational workshops, the creation of informative posters, and the promotion of modern irrigation systems—particularly drip irrigation—which help reduce water waste and improve the efficiency of water use for plants and crops. Furthermore, the recommendations emphasize curbing water waste in homes and institutions by maintaining water networks, repairing leaks, and ensuring taps are turned off when not in use. Additionally, there is a call to expand the use of renewable energy—especially solar power—as a clean source that reduces reliance on traditional energy. Other recommendations include periodically monitoring water and energy consumption efficiency, adopting practical measures to reduce usage and improve resource management, and strengthening the role of research institutions and museums in fostering an environmental culture. This involves providing accessible scientific information that empowers society to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
This activity contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
